The Archangel Michael has the distinction of being only one of two angels written about in both the Bible and the Koran. [He] is depicted as the leader of the Celestial Host. His name translates as “Who Is As God,” and in Christian literature he is described as the greatest Holy figure aside from God Himself and His Son.
In The Book of Revelations, it is Michael who leads the armies of Heaven against the legions of Satan, who is often depicted at the time of the War in Heaven as a serpent or dragon. At the pinnacle of the great battle, Michael descends from the highest point in Heaven, holding the key to the Abyss and a great chain. He engages Satan and binds him tightly with the chain, which will hold the monstrous dragon for 1,000 years. Michael then casts the betrayer down into Hell and locks the gates.
